Chez Ganeau, 1770-01-01. Leather Bound. Good. In French. 1770 first edition thus Chez Ganeau (Paris), 3 7/8 x 6 1/2 inches tall full leather bound, five raised bands and gilt design and lettering to spine, 162, [2] pp. Covers bumped to tips, rubbed and edgeworn. Front free-endpaper lacking and half title adhered to front pastedown. Title page has notations and ownership inscription of the Benedictine Nuns of Our Lady of Angels in Princethorpe, near Rugby, Warwickshire, England, where they established a monastery after fleeing the persecution in France during the Revolution. Otherwise, apart from occasional minor creasing to a couple of pages, a very good copy - clean, bright and unmarked - of this scarce early edition of a popular book of parables. OCLC (Nos. 716986715 and 785848105) locates only two copies worldwide - one at the Bibliotheque Cantonale in Fribourg, Switzerland, and one at the Universitatsbibliothek Eichstatt in Germany. ~CC~ Bonaventure Giraudeau (1697-1774), was a Jesuit French, Hellenistic and Hebrew scholar. His parables were issued in dozens of different editions and translations, many of which added to or changed the parables presented.
