Paris: V.-A. Waille, 1849. 2nd edition. Leather. Very Good/None. 2354 8vo. Translated by I. Goschler and C.-F. Audley. Three volumes, complete. Gilt stamp of Maynooth Roman Catholic College to front and back of each volume. Full leather with gilt decoration and red and black title plates to spines. Marbled end papers and marbled page edges. Volume I has folding, coloured map of Orbis Romanus Christianus, with inset a map of Palestine in the time of Jesus and another of the journeys of St Paul. Volume II has a folding, coloured map of Germanorum et Slavorum per me diem aevum Orbis Christianus Regnorum (by P. Binetau). Volume I starts with a discussion of sources for this history, briefly discusses earlier religions, then covers the Apostolic period. The remainder of this section is concerned mainly with theological issues- the many heresies that sprang up in the early days of the Church, and an overview of the morality and way of life of early Christians. The last section covers the period from 313 AD to the end of the 7th Century and includes a discussion of the sacraments. Volume II treats chiefly of the work of the Church among Germanic and Slav peoples until the 16th Century. As well as describing administrative structures the book has sometimes lively descriptions of the conversion of various of these peoples (or their refusal to be converted). Sects, heresies, religious orders. Volume III From Luther to the time of writing, including English catholicism, English protestantism and the French Revolution. Condition notes: Leather worn along hinge creases and on corners but gilt decoration in good condition, other than some wear to bottom edges. Sporadic foxing. The map to Volume I has a tear which does affect the map but with no loss: a repair is possible. The map in Volume II also has a tear, but much smaller. See photographs below for details. Small ink number to reverse of each title page (shelf mark?). Overall a sound, attractive set.
