About This Item

London: Tom Stacey, 1972. Gold title on green boards which are clean and unmarked with no wear. Internally there is some light foxing to closed edges else very clean, tight and unmarked. Dustjacket has two small repaired closed tears and is price clipped. Illustrations by Doris Lee. When first published in 1939 in America it won a prize for the author. 'Mrs. Dengler was not the most popular resident of Pittsville. She was an elderish lady, quite stout, with a red face and poppy black eyes which were always bugging round for sinfulness. When she saw the advertisement for Morton Entertainments, her eyes popped out further than usual and her face got redder and redder. By hook or by crook she was going to prevent Mr. Morton and his daughter Tess from giving their show and began scheming to discredit them - and Ali, their elephant - in the eyes of Pittsville. Fortunately, they had friends - Uncle Sam Swyer, his two grandsons, his hired man, Don Harding - and had a scheme of their own , to show Mrs. Dengler where sinfulness really begins and ends. Ali had a big part to play and carried it out wih all the sagacity and good manners proper to an Indian elephant'. C3E. Hard Cover. Very Good/Very Good. Illus. by Lee, Doris. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
