An early mystery featuring a female detective, Hilda Wade, a nurse who comes to St. Nathaniel’s Hospital to work with medical sleuth/physiologist Professor Sebastian. The book is narrated by Dr. Cumberledge, Sebastian’s assistant, who follows her to Rhodesia and Tibet as Hilda uncovers dark secrets about the Professor’s past. The novel was first serialized in the Strand Magazine and was published after the author’s death. The publisher’s note states that the last chapter of the novel was finished by Allen’s friend and neighbor, Arthur Conan Doyle. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall .
