About This Item

1 vols. Done on a sheet of buff paper 9 1/2 x 6 3/4 inches, the image being approximately 4 x 5 inches, signed in pencil at the center of the lower margin "George Cruikshank". Mounted in a decorated, bevelled mat. Fine. 1 vols. Fine Cruikshank Watercolor Illustration. The drawing, very carefully rendered in pencil with multi-colored washes, shows, in a kitchen setting, a middle-aged woman to whom a younger one is presenting her visitor, a towering Guardsman, who stands at attention, saluting. They stand by a table on which reposes bread and cheese, and it is evident the soldier has dropped in for a snack; from the shy smile on the young woman's face one presumes there is an element of--dare we say it?--affection involved. Almost certainly a book illustration, and a fine, attractive example of Cruikshank's later style.
