Description:
First edition, one of 215 copies printed. 40 pp. Marbled paper boards over black cloth backstrip, printed spine label. Fine copy. Bolton's first book, and only lifetime publication. Donald Justice wrote of Bolton's poems: "Effortlessly they transcend the merely anecdotal; they are always edging towards something emblematic. And they can be immensely moving in their modesty." A beautiful and dark cycle of verse, full of loss, winter and poverty, yet transcendent in its language and clear-eyed vision.

Description:
1684 Abraham Cowley English Poetry Mistress Motto Pindar Ode Davideis Sylva RARE

"What shall I do to be for ever known,
And make the Age to come own?"
I shall like beasts or common people die,
Unless you write my elegy." – Abraham Cowley, The Motto
Abraham Cowley was one of the leading English poets during the 17th-century. This charming and rare edition was the last edition of the original one-volume printing. Following this edition, the works were printed in multiple volumes. Famous poems, such as 'The Motto,' 'The Mistress,' 'Ode to Pindar,' and 'Davideis' are all included in this collection. The Pindaric Ode is especially interesting in that Cowley attempted to reproduce Pindar's works, but in doing so, he misinterpreted the metrical patterns, and, in doing so, did not accurately reflect Pindar's poetry. He did, however, create one of the most famous odes ever written, which would become the influence for William Wordsworth's famous ode "Intimations of Immortality."

Signed by both Hughes and Keen on the title page, and inscribed at length on the ffep by English fly fishing expert Dermot Wilson. Edges of boards faintly dust soiled, else about fine in a very good plus, price-clipped jacket, moderately toned and with some light crumpling along the top edges. Hughes and Keen met in 1976 at the suggestion of Hughes' second wife Carol, and quickly bonded over their shared love of fishing. Though conceived as a collaborative project soon after, according to Hughes scholar Ann Skea, the publication of "River" was delayed by several years as their agent worked to find a publisher willing to commit to high-quality color reproductions. Trumansburg, NY: Out of Step Press. Fine with no dust jacket. 2016. Numbered Edition; First Printing. Pamphlet. The author's non-linear poem about the billeting of soldiers in civilian homes in wartime. Copy 89 of a limited edition of 250. Folded into the form of a letter, the work was letterpress printed in wraps of handmade "combat paper" made from military uniforms. The author says: "Some time ago-maybe a year, maybe two? It's a thought experiment: if we tore down the barracks at military hospitals and offered incentives for Americans in the surrounding neighborhoods to quarter injured service members, what would the honest instructions… Read More
