New York, NY: Viking Press, 1942. First edition. Hardcover. Good/good. Thick octavo (standard size). Inscribed and SIGNED "Wood" on flyleaf by the author. Slight wear to edges and corners of boards. Dj has more wear with chipping at head and heel of spine, and the lower left corner of rear dj cover missing, with no loss to text on the dj. Commercial bookplate on pastedown. Some staining to foredge of pages. Nice red illustration of a snake on spine of book. 314 p. w/ illus., endnotes, bibliography, index. The first survey of the Copperhead movement, with Wood suggesting that the peace Democrats were worried the Republicans were radically changing the world they knew, and were naive about the Confederacy ever rejoining the Union except by force.
