With a woodcut title vignette, a fine etched allegorical frontipiece (signed and dated: R. de Hooghe, Parisiis 1668) and 60 very fine half-page emblematic plates, all drawn and etched by Romeyn de Hooghe. ¶ The very rare first edition of the first illustrated book by Romeyn (Romein) de Hooghe, one of the greatest Dutch book illustrators of the late Golden Age, who masterly depicted human expressions, emotions and movements of the body, but also praised for his fine landscapes. Plate 43 is the FIRST and oldest graphic representation of a Mamma amputation. The plates are in first and sharp impression, representing all kinds of vivid scenes of the daily life. i.a. a sick man refusing his meal, a person on the rack, landscapes, fishing, hunting, animals, etc . The work is dedicated to the father of the city of Rotterdam, Johan de Vries, and is preceded by 5 laudatory poems. Landwehr, R. de Hooghe, 3.-- (A few leaves with very small tears in the outer margin; some scattered occasional light foxing; a few leaves with very slight waterstains in the margins, but a very good copy of this very rare piece of Baroque book illustration, and offer here at a correct price).
