Anne began her diary on her 13th birthday, 12 June 1942 during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands. The diary was found in the hiding place ( 'Het Achterhuis') by Miep Gies, after Anne Frank, her Jewish family and other Jews were taken away to the concentration-camps. Miep Gies was one of the helpers during their time of hiding in 'The Secret Annexe / Het Achterhuis'.
