New York, NY: New American Library, 1963. [Spy novel] FIRST U.S. EDITION. A superb association copy, INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR TO HUGH HEFNER. Octavo (22 x 14cm), pp.299; [1], blank. Cloth-backed blue paper-covered boards, decorated in gilt to spine, ochre top edge and endpapers, illustrated jacket priced at $4.50. With presentation note to flyleaf: "To | Hugh Hefner | from | Ian Fleming (underscore)". Some bumping, jacket a little nicked and creased. Very good indeed, in a modern clamshell box. A significant copy; Hugh Hefner (1926-2017) was the founder and editor-in-chief of Playboy magazine, in which several James Bond stories first appeared. This title, On Her Majesty's Secret Service, was the first of Ian Fleming's novels to be serialised there. Following his recent death, some 800 volumes from the Hugh M. Hefner collection were exhibited at Rare Books LA in Pasadena, including the present volume, which was the only inscribed Ian Fleming book he retained in his library. According to the later Bond novelist Raymond Benson "the appearances of Fleming's work in Playboy did much to perpetuate the Bond/Playboy image in the early days of the author's fame in America" (The James Bond Bedside Companion, p.24). Signed American First Edition titles are extremely scarce; only four U.S. books are recorded sold at auction (Casino Royale, 2009), Thrilling Cities (2008), Dr No (2008) and Goldfinger (1999).

A Highly Impressive Illuminated manuscript, Brilliant Watercolours and Gouache on Mulberry paper comprising 204 panels, laid onto heavier paper and bound concertina style, depicting an elaborate Daoist religious ceremony, including a procession of musicians, banner bearers, dignitaries, deities and mythical creatures, and Kaigen-kuyo or the ritual of the eye-opening ceremony, the Five Thunder Gods are invoked to dispel demons (the blue figures with flaming red hair), the twelve animals of the zodiac are present representing the blending of religious and secular Chinese beliefs, as well as drawing attention to the importance of the date of the ceremony (the second day of the second division of the second month of winter, in the eleventh year of the reign of Tongzhi, a ren shen year). Library notice to pastedown, jacket was taped to boards, without front flap. The majority of Cape's James Bond hardcover reprints were taken into the lending library system to replace existing well-worn stock. This was the first Cape printing of On Her Majesty's Secret Service to be published since the author's death in August 1964.
