Troy, NY: Burleigh Lithograph Co, 1918. Very good - condition. Powerful large art poster, a recruiting tool for workers at the Watervliet Arsenal's manufacturing operation during World War I, with illustration by artist Edward Buyck.

The Watervliet Arsenal was founded in 1813 near the Hudson in Watervliet NY, and is the country's oldest continuously active manufacturing arsenal, producing cannon for the US military.

The poster depicts two muscle bound male workers in the foreground working on a cannon base, as workers in the background hoist the main part of the cannon into place with ropes. Printed signature in the lower right.

Buyck (1888- 1960) was a Belgian who was wounded in WWI and immigrated to the States. He was a member of the Royal Academy of Belgium and is known for his portraits of Franklin Delano Roosevelt and other prominent politicians. He lived in upstate New York for much of his adult life. His paintings are held in the collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum and many New York institutions. He is noted for the paintings 'Clinton's Brigade at Canajoharie' and 'Canajoharie about 1780', commissioned as part of the Sesquicentennial celebration and pageant of Clinton's Brigade that brought boats overland from the Mohawk River at Canajoharie to Otsego Lake.
