Led by Lieut-Commander G W De Long, the "Jeannette" was frozen and later crushed in latitudes north of the Arctic Circle, and the survivor's boats separated by gales. The saga is told here from the viewpoint of "Jeannette's" chief engineer G W Melville, after extensive research.
