"German-born Heinrich Tonnies (1825-1903) was one of nineteenth-century Denmark's leading photographers. Tonnies had his own studio in Aalborg from 1856 to 1903, after which time his descendants and their assistants ran the business until 1975. The exhibition shows around 350 pictures taken over the whole span of Tonnies' working life with focus on his portraits - pictures of an artistic standard that goes far beyond their original function. Heinrich Tonnies was a master at arranging his subjects so as to form harmonious, aesthetically pleasing compositions, and he had a fine sense for lighting and mood: all of which has resulted in first-class portraiture. The fact that Heinrich Tonnies always used the most up-to-date technical equipment, and that he could be persuaded to retouch pictures - erasing wrinkles and slimming-down waists - only serves to complete the picture of a skilled craftsman with a nose for business."
