New York: Scribner, Armstrong & Co., published in 1877, but dated 1878., 1878.. Very good. - Octavo, 8-1/2 inches high by 5-3/4 inches wide. Pictorial burgundy red cloth titled and elaborately illustrated in black & gilt on the front cover & the spine. The covers are rubbed with wear to the corners and head & tail of the spine. x, [iv], 370 & [2] pages, illustrated with a full-page frontispiece and 96 wood-engraved plates. A contemporary gift inscription dated 1878, is penned on the front blank. The endpapers and front & rear blanks are soiled and there is some slight soiling to the last couple of pages. Very good.

First American edition. Although dated 1878, the book was actually published in November 1877, simultaneously with the English edition.

Subtitled "Or the Career of a Comet" beneath the title on the spine.
