Linen sailcloth binding over hand-beveled boards with a spine of top-grain goatskin stamped in genuine gold foil. The decorative device on the front is an actual-size reproduction of a stylized sea urchin from a rare piece of ancient Hawaiian tapa cloth. The slipcase and endpapers design reproduces another early piece of tapa cloth. .
