About This Item
Sydney: HarperCollins, 2016. Paperback large trade, very good condition, black & white & colour photos centre spread, few black & white text-photos, pages lightly toned as usual, minor edgewear. 369 pp. A biography by Helen O'Neil of Harry Seidler, the famous Australian architect best known for Rose Seidler House designed for his family, who found sanctuary in Australia after WW2. He was born in Austria to an affluent Jewish family. He fled to England as a refugee, where he was imprisoned as an enemy alien and was sent to Canada. In the internment camps, architecture became his saviour. When released, he studied in Canada and at Harvard under Bauhaus master Walter Gropius. In 1948, he moved to Australia to design a home for his parents. This book recounts the power, passions and private life of the architect who shaped modern Australian architectural design.
