Presentation inscription dated 1868 on the front endpaper of each volume, the covers are worn at the corners and ends of the spine, there is some spotting to the plates and a few pages, some dampstaining to the covers. New York: McDonnell Bros., 1866 Book. Fair. Hardcover. First Edition. Elephant Folio - over 15 - 23" tall. Large brown two-volume Civil War book set with a gilt cover title. Five inch top spine cover chip and a one and one half inch bottom spine chip to volume 1. Volume 2 has a top chip/slight gouge at the spine top and a small chip at the bottom spine. Covers with light to moderate worming. Shaken and cracked bindings with a few loose pages and some old taped tears. The first 8 pages (from the title page) to the second volume are loose from binding and present. Fair minus to Fair plus condition. About 16-1/2 x 12 with 836 total pages. Illustrated, plus maps. Rare two-volume Civil War set (1866 and 1868)! .

Highly autobiographical in character, an apprentice effort, Durrell's novel sank largely without trace. And as with so many unsold titles, the majority of copies were destroyed during the Blitz. Blue boards with the barest hint of rubbing to edges; no dustjacket, spine incorrectly lettered Pied Pipers of Lovers, bookseller's price on front free endpaper, slight spotting to fore and top-edges, otherwise a clean, solid, well-preserved copy of Lawrence's exceedingly scarce first novel.

First issue of the 1st edition. 12mo., [Vol.1]331; [Vol.2] 307; [Vol.3] 315pp., illustrated with 24 frontispieces and plates. Bound in full morocco, with boards single lined in gilt. The six compartment spines are decorated with a five leaf flower in each compartment, and title and volume number in gilt. Edge dentelles. a.e.g. Tips very lightly rubbed. Spines sunned, with joints lightly rubbed. Some loss of gilt to the spine's lettering. New paste downs and added end papers. Each volume's title page, and volume 1's half title page have been stamped with an oval stamp. These stamps show signs of having been attempted to be erased. It is my belief, when coupled with the new paste downs and end papers, that this set was formerly an ex-library set, with an attempt to remove all library markings.
