Original red cloth with gilt lettering to the spine, in the dustwrapper featuring a photograph of the original New York production of the play. An excellent near fine copy, the binding square and firm, the cloth bright, with a few light surface marks visible to the front panel. The contents are clean and without inscriptions or stamps. The dustwrapper is a little rubbed to spine tips, upper corners and folds, but otherwise bright, clean and unclipped (9s 6d net to the front flap). A lovely copy. Beckett's third full-length play was first performed at the Cherry Lane Theatre, New York, on September 17th 1961, directed by Alan Schneider, with Ruth White as Winnie and John C. Becher as Willie. The first UK performance followed at the Royal Court Theatre, London, on November 1st 1962, directed by George Devine, with Tony Richardson and Brenda Bruce as the two protagonists. In accordance with the performance history, the text of the play was first published by Grove Press, New York, in 1961, the UK edition following in 1962.
