On May 10th, 1969 the US Army 101st Airborne Division, the 9th US US Marine Regiment and the 3rd Regiment ARVN, moved into the A Shau Valley in the Central Highlands. The valley was a major terminus of the Ho Chi Minh Trail and had been used by the North Vietnamese Army as a staging post for their 1968 attack on Hue during the Tet Offensive.
