About This Item

New York: Oxford University Press, 1985. Hardcover. Small 4to. Black cloth spine and brown paper over boards, price-clipped dust jacket. xi, 363pp. Frontispiece, illustrations. Near fine/near fine. Handsome, tight first edition -- with a choice autograph addition: Tipped to an inner flyleaf is a Typed Letter Signed from Johannsen, 1p, 8½" X 11", Urbana, IL, 1978 January 5. Addressed to Professor Frederick I. Olson. Near fine. On University of Illinois Department of History letterhead, Johannsen writes a colleague at the University of Wisconsin and arranges a visit to Madison. Boldly signed in full in black fineline. Johannsen (1925-2011) was an award-winning biographer and historian who specialized in the Civil War and Stephen A. Douglas. Signed copies of his works are seldom encountered, for some reason, and a copy with letter from the famed historian to another noted Midwestern historian is unusual and desirable.
