About This Item

Franklin Center, PA: The Franklin Library, 1977. Hardcover. Illustrations by Jerry Pinkney. 8vo. Full green calf with gilt lettering and extensive decorations. (8pp), 325pp. All edges gilt. Sewn-in green satin page marker. Illustrations, green watered silk endpapers. Fine. A tight, handsome volume from this publisher's "The Collected Stories of the World's Greatest Writers" series -- with unusual and relevant autograph addition: Tipped to an inner flyleaf are two fine matching heavy stock 5" X 3" cards signed and dated by two cast members from the "Gulliver's Travels" film version issued this same year: Murray Melvin (born 1932), who boldly signs and dates (5 June 1971) in blue ballpoint; and David Prowse (born 1935), uncredited in this film (but best known as "Darth Vadar" in "Star Wars"), who boldly signs and dates (8 June 1987) in blue ballpoint. Laid in is the ideal bookmark: The two original Melvin and Prowse transmittal envelopes. An interesting copy.

Synopsis

Gulliver's Travels (1726, amended 1735), officially Travels into Several Remote Nations of the World, in Four Parts. By Lemuel Gulliver, First a Surgeon, and then a Captain of several Ships, is a novel by Irish writer and clergyman Jonathan Swift that is both a satire on human nature and a parody of the "travellers' tales" literary sub-genre. It is Swift's best known full-length work, and a classic of English literature. The book became tremendously popular as soon as it was published.
