Singapore: Printers Ltd.; maps by Lithographers Ltd., 1936. First 1936 edition, 4to, pp.72, illustrations, 4 colour plates after paintings by Mrs Barnard, 9 maps of Singapore in adverts, 4 large scale folding maps printed in colour (of Malacca, Kuala Lumpur, Ipoh and George Town). Text in English, French, German, Dutch and Chinese. A very good copy in slightly worn original wrappers, spine rubbed. A scarce guide to Singapore, Malacca, Kuala Lumpur, Ipoh and Penang, with little information about publisher which may have been Federated Malay States Railways, whose advertisements are prominent, or one of the tourist agencies. Although the title page states 9 maps, this copy has only the four tipped in folding maps, together with 9 maps of parts of Singapore to assist in locating advertisers. Earlier editions had 9 folding maps. Mrs Barnard, married to the Divisional Engineer of the FMS Railways, was active in Kuala Lumpur society from her arrival in around 1903. She also provided the colour illustrations for Cuthbert Woodville Harrison's Illustrated Guide to the Federated Malay States, issued in several editions between 1910 and 1923.
