New York; (1928): Row, Peterson & Company. First Edition. Octavo. xi [I], 687, xxxvi p. Dorothy Sloan's copy lacked the facsimile letter to Dobie and books had bumped corners. This copy has Dobie's ownership signature on the front fly leaf and the following facsimilie letter to Dobie from the publisher on their letterhead: "Mr. J. Frank Dobie, Austin, Texas, Dear Sir, You may know some one who is interested in the enclosed form letter we are sending out. If so will you please hand it to them? No doubt you heard that 'the Growth of a Nation' was adopted for Texas a few weeks ago. We are certainly indebted to you for the assistance you gave us. That Dallas News review made a favorable impression all over Texas. Wtih best wishes, I am, very cordially yours, Paul W. Barnett, Texas Representative, Row, Peterson." Dobie's review calls this textbook "the first history of the United States in which that part of the country west of the Mississippi.....has been equally recognized as constituting an important part of this Nation." It pleased Dobie that this history included the importance of the Chisholm Trail, Circuit Riding Preachers, cowboys, packeries, and rangers as well as the social and economic causes of the Mexican War. A remarkable item that without Dobie might not have been the textbook for a generation of Texans. Bound in dark Blue cloth lettered and decorated in orange, spine lettering orange, with news clipping mounted to endpapers of Dobie's review. A very nice copy.
