Madison, WI: Organization of Arab Students in the USA, 1955. Pamphlet. Six staplebound packets, all 8.5x11 inches, generally mild handling wear with exceptions noted below. Includes the following documents: "Arabs warned to self examine themselves" (report on the address by Fayez Sayegh, 2 pages, corrections by hand); "Adjustment of the Arab student abroad" by Schmoker (3 pages); "The Arab family in flux" by Abu-Lughod (10 pages); "The challenge to Arab youth," an address by ambassador Kamil Abdul Rahim to the students (6p., with handwritten pencil notes on the back of each page); a two-page packet titled "The challenge to Arab youth in a changing Arab world" (heavily crinkled), and a two-page press release, "Social challenge decisions by convention," reporting on discussions at the convention. The organization's membership included many students from Arab countries who planned to return to those lands after finishing their studies; the contents of these documents reflect that situation, with Fayez Sayegh of the Arab League warning the students that they needed to examine their own "propensity for intellectual snobbery and arrogance" and avoid bringing the nihilist rebellion of American university life back to the Middle East. Other topics discussed include the mismatch between Arab needs (described by some as incorporating more technical and vocational education) and the topics covered in foreign universities, as well as the alienation of Arab students from their home cultures.
