This is an extremely important study by a once-promising young native American scholar who, sadly, took his own life a few years ago, but who left the world of Steinbeck scholarship this landmark study and a number of other books, with this book Owens "examines how Steinbeck used this would-be Eden (California) to explore the moral bankruptcy of American society, to explore the corruption that lay beneath the beckoning surface of the American dream," this is a very scarce book that seldom comes on the market. Fine, with no fading along jacket spine as is so common with this book.

No dust jacket, this is John Gardner's first book, preceding his The Resurrection by four years, it is essentially a text book written while he was an English professor at Chico State College, Signed by Gardner, it includes John Steinbeck's The Chrysanthemums, pages 248-258, text from The Long Valley, Goldstone & Payne B124, not recorded by Morrow, also includes Ernest Hemingway, William Faulkner, Edgar Allan Poe, Anton Chekhov, James Joyce, and others. Very good plus.

Petaluma, Anchor & Acorn Press, 1990, first edition, wrappers. Softcover.. With its illustrated dust jacket, first separate printing of this superb short story, No. 83 of 100 numbered copies illustrated with hand-colored wood engravings and Signed by the illustrator, Colleen Dwire Weaver, including a wood engraving of a young John Steinbeck writing, this illustration lies within a double-spread title page and was created by Weaver from photos of Steinbeck by Sonya Noskowiak and Robert Capa, it also includes an Afterword by Weaver who produced this fine press item as part of an intership and who later received permission from Elaine Steinbeck to sell her remaining copies (most were given away to her family and friends), very scarce. Fine.

London, T. Fisher Unwin Ltd., 1925, first edition, first printing, dust jacket. Hardcover.. Review Copy with review slip, preface by R. B. Cunninghame Graham, jacket illustration by E. Lucchesi, includes four short stories, they are The Warrior's Soul, Prince Roman, The Tale, and The Black Mate, all the stories were privately printed originally, this is their first trade publication, Smith 27, Keating 193. Very good.

Garden City, Doubleday, Page & Company, 1923, first trade edition, first printing, dust jacket. Hardcover.. Original blue cloth with gilt lettering and decoration, first issue with the single quote mark missing before the word "That's" on page 219, seven lines up, Smith 25, Keating 179. Clean, very nearly fine.

Paris, Editions Rombaldi, n .d. (1963), first edition thus.. This hardcover was issued without a dust jacket, it is a special French commemoratiive edition of Tortilla Flat translated by Brigitte V. Barbey, issued in conjunction with Steinbeck's having been awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature, Rombaldi would annually print such a Nobel laureate-related work, the book includes two speeches delivered at Steinbeck's Nobel ceremonies as well as an introduction by Dr. Kjell Stromberg, followed by the text for Tortilla Flat and a Steinbeck bibliography, illustrated on the front cover in color by Picasso, also illustrated with a woodcut illustration of Steinbeck by Michel Cauvet, it also includes eight full-page color illustrations by Fontanarosa as well as an extra suite of eight full-page color lithographs bound in the rear, see Goldstone & Payne D182, this was the Jacob J. Foster copy. Fine.

NY, Ballantine Books, 1956, first edition thus, first printing, dust jacket. Hardcover.. This scarce and very collectible Ballantine hardcover was published simultaneously with the paperback, it includes four short novels, the first of which to be selected for inclusion in this book was Stegner's Field Guide to the Western Birds, it also includes Norman Mailer's The Man Who Studied Yoga, Colberg B40 identifies this title, but that undoubtedly was the paperback and not this very scarce Ballantine hardcover (an extremely collectible series in its own right), this copy bound in slate blue cloth with black lettering on the spine, one of four known bindings, there is no priority established (the others are pale blue, aqua green, and red, all with black lettering). Very good .

London, Anthony Treherne & Co., Ltd., 1905, first edition, first printing.. Included in Harry Furniss's Christmas Annual, 1905, here re-bound in green cloth with a cover label giving the title and author, this was Furniss's first annual, illustrated by him, contents page either laid in loosely or dis-bound, Shaw's very successful play is the first offering, also includes A Wedding Gift by H. Rider Haggard, affixed to the front free endpaper is brief note Signed by Shaw of some mystery dated 17 Jan, 1902, to wit: "Told you so!/Thanks for the cheque./What is K's address? There/are more ways of killing a dog/than hanging him, and I think/I'll venture a fresh attempt on my/own account./This, in dreadful secrecy/G. Bernard Shaw"). Remnants of bookplate removal on front free endpaper, binding a bit loose.

NY, Harper & Brothers, 1904, first American edition, first printing.. Original green cloth with front decorated in orange and black with title and author in gilt, Smith 11, Keating 62, bookplate on front pastedown from the A. M. McGregor Home, Tootier McGregor established the A. M. McGregory Home in 1904 in East Cleveland, OH to honor her late husband, Ambrose, a close associate of John D. Rockefeller. Very good plus.

NY, McClure, Phillips and Company, 1903, first edition, first printing.. Original blind-stamped blue cloth with anchor design, title, author, and publisher in gilt, Falk, Amy Foster, and To-Morrow are the three "other stories" that appeared in Typhoon and Other Stories as published by Heinemann in London in 1903, this is the first separate printing of these three stories in book form, with 10 pages of undated ads at the end, Cagle A8c, Keating 46. Just light wear, very nearly fine.
