About This Item

London: Collins, 1977. First edition. Cloth. Near Fine/Very Good Indeed. 8.5" by 5.5". None. The first UK edition of this popular tale of life in the Marines from Pat Conroy. The novel is based on Conroy's own childhood experiences growing up in a military family. Conroy's own father, Donald Conroy, was the inspiration for "Bull" Meecham. Pat Conroy was an American author who is best known for 'The Great Santini' and 'The Prince of Tides', both of which were made into Oscar nominated films. Some of his other novels include 'The Boo', 'The Water is Wide', and 'South of Broad'. In a navy cloth binding with original unclipped dustwrapper. Externally, smart. Some light bumping. Dustwrapper is quite smart, though with a couple of chips and small closed tears, and some sunning to the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean, with just the occasional handing mark, and some creasing to the lower fore-edge. Near Fine

Synopsis

The Great Santini is a novel written by Pat Conroy and published in 1976. Marine Col. Bull Meecham commands his home like a soldiers’ barracks. Cold and controlling, but also loving, Bull has complicated relationships with each member of his family—in particular, his eldest son, Ben.   A born athlete who desperately seeks his father’s approval, Ben is determined to break out from the colonel’s shadow. With guidance from teachers at his new school, he strives to find the courage to stand up to his father once and for all.   Inspired by Pat Conroy’s own difficult relationship with his father, The Great Santini is a captivating and unflinching portrayal of modern family, and a moving novel of a son determined to become his own man. The novel was made into a film of the same name in 1979, starring Robert Duvall in the title role.
