About This Item

New York: W. W. Norton & Company, Inc., 1999. AN5 - An advance reader's edition paperback book in very good condition that has some bumped corners, light discoloration and shelf wear. This is a haunting, luminous work of family, loyalty, and exile, in which blood and history are elegantly twined together - the broters still converse in Gaelic, legends lurk at the edge of simplest conversation, and language and music are themselves links to a heroic, defeated past. One of Canada's most distiguished writers, Alistair MacLeod has written an astonishingly resonant novel, destined to bring him the international renown he so justly deserves. 9.25"x6.25", 283 pages. Satisfaction Guaranteed.. Paperback. Very Good/No Jacket as Issued. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Advance Reading Copy (ARC).

Synopsis

No Great Mischief is a 1999 novel by Alistair MacLeod. The novel opens in the present day, with successful orthodontist Alexander MacDonald visiting his elderly older brother Calum in Toronto, Ontario. The novel explores the emotional bonds of family through flashbacks to their childhood in Cape Breton Island and young adulthood spent in the mines of Northern Ontario, clan history dating back to 1779, and present day interactions between the two brothers and a sister.
