About This Item

Philadelphia, PA: T. B. Peterson and Brothers, 1861. First US Edition . Hardcover. Poor. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. Hardcover, original binding with blindstamped front and rear boards which reads: Peterson's Uniform Duodecimo Edition of the Complete Works of Charles Dickens "Boz". Peterson's editions are one of the earliest known US versions and the non-illustrated edition is considered the first state of the Philadelphia (US) Edition. Described officially as the "Unillustrated Edition" (ref: Jarndyce Dickens Catalogue #590, 591), and was published prior to the editions advertised with 34, and later 27, illustrations. The Unillustrated Edition was thought to only exist in wrappers, though this one is hardcover with the Peterson "Boz" embossing - making it somewhat of an oddity. Front board detached and it appears both front and rear end pages (the yellow sheets that match the pastedowns) have been removed - this is assuming there were matching end pages on both sides. There is also chipping on the spine with portions missing. There's still one blank end page in the front end three in the rear. The rest of the binding is good - no torn or loose pages and no other hinge cracks noted. Original owner's name written on front pastedown as well as on front end page. Normally this book would be graded as Fair but as there is a possibility of missing end pages and we have downgraded the condition to Poor. See photos.

Synopsis

Great Expectations is a classic novel by Charles Dickens, published in 1861. It tells the story of Pip, a young orphan boy brought up by his abusive sister and her blacksmith husband in rural England. Pip dreams of becoming a gentleman and escaping poverty, but his life takes a dramatic turn when he receives a large fortune from an anonymous benefactor. As he rises in society, he becomes involved with a host of colorful characters, including the eccentric Miss Havisham and her adopted daughter Estella, and learns valuable lessons about love, loyalty, and the true meaning of happiness. The novel is considered one of Dickens' greatest works and a masterpiece of English literature.

Yesterday's Book shop is owned and operated by a disabled veteran. Due to my limitations, I often have to rely on speech-to-text software to list the books. If the description has typos ("and pages" instead of "end pages", pace downs instead of pastedowns, guilt instead of gilt, etc,) PLEASE let me know so I can correct the listing. The software spells words by phonetics and can make errors that I may not catch.

There is a 30 day money back guarantee if the book arrives damaged or is not as described. Please contact us prior if you have any issues with your purchases and we will make sure you are taken care of.

About Yesterday's Book Shop (Member IOBA)

Yesterday's Book Shop is an independent, family-owned establishment. The store first opened in 1966 under the name Collector's Corner and was located in Western Maryland. The Collector's Corner dealt mainly in books but also sold stamps and assorted ephemera. In 1975 the name was changed to Yesterday's Book Shop when the store only offered books and printed matter. In the early 2000s the brick and mortar store was closed and now we only sell online.

All of the book pictures were taken at the time the book was listed and we never use generic or stock photos in any listing. If you would like additional photos or information on any listing please let us know and we will be more than happy to comply.
