About This Item
Synopsis
Thomas Ruggles Pynchon, Jr. is an American novelist. TIME Magazine included the novel in its "All-Time 100 Greatest Novels," a list of the best English-language novels from 1923 to 2005. This novel; Gravity’s Rainbow is a fabulous work of hysterical realism. The story takes place primarily in Europe at the conclusion of World War II. The narrative centers on Tyrone Slothrop who is an American on a mission to locate V-2 rockets that have been manufactured by the German military. The novel describes misadventures of several unusual characters and illustrates the struggle between those who rebel against the war and those who suppress their identity in order to be able to better serve. Although fictional, the story seamlessly integrates actual historical events into the plot. A fascinating work of penetrating analysis regarding the impact technology makes upon society. Nebula Award Nominee for Novel (1973) , National Book Award for Fiction (1974) , William Dean Howells Award
