Eastbourne, East Sussex: Grand Hotel, 1987. A Fine unmarked copy with near Fine dustjacket which has lamination imperfections (as usual) caused by the production process. viii + 215 pages. 98 illustrations. Endpapers are of facsimile signatures of famous guests. The Grand Hotel, Eastbourne, is a large white palace - a haven from the rigours of the outside world. Since its opening, the rich, the famous and the eccentric have entered and been pampered and humoured. The Prince of Wales was here, as were his younger brother and sister-in-law, who were to take his place on the throne he renounced. Haile Selassie came here from his beloved Abyssinia, and when he walked into the dining room everyone in the room stood and clapped. Nellie Melba came several times, as did the beautiful Russian ballerina, Anna Pavlova. Many of the world's great musicians played or conducted at the Grand, from Ysaye to Padarewski, from Kubelik to the English trio of Sir Henry Wood, Sir Thomas Beecham and Sir Edward Elgar. Claude Debusssy wrote his symphony 'La Mer' here in 1905. The Palm Court Orchestra broadcast on the BBC from the Great Hall every Sunday from 1925 until the Second World War. The book will take you through a century of the Hotel, its development, its dramas and its famous and idiosyncratic guests. D4. First Edition. Hard Cover. Fine/Near Fine. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.
