About This Item
New York: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1939. First Edition . Cloth. Good+/Good+. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. The author's scarce second novel and second mystery based on the railroad industry. Railroad Detective Andy MacVeigh and his wife Sue try solving the murder of a dancer in New York's Grand Central Terminal. From the dj flap: "The author was given the run of the Grand Central Terminal and the elaborate underground system by the New York Central Railroad." The front and rear endpapers consist of a map "Plan of Grand Central Terminal at Express Level." Salmon cloth with blue titles. Age-toning to paper. Bookstore stamp at top (barely visible) & bottom edges of text block, front & rear endpapers, and to one interior page, not affecting any text. A mild slant to the spine. Soiling to edges of text block. Previous owner's bookplate on verso of half-title page. Boards lightly soiled. Tightly bound, corner tips very good, and text clean. Dust-jacket, now protected in a removable archival plastic cover, has 7 spots of tape repair to inside surface, age-toning, & edgewear, including chips and tears, not affecting any text or illustration. The largest chip is at the spine head & measures about 3/8 by 2 inches. Some rubbing, especially on spine, but not affecting any text or illustration. Unclipped - original price remains on flap. Cover art still attractive. An atmospheric, New York City murder mystery and a very scarce book indeed.
