The author tells the beguiling story of how this celebrated place came to be, from the time of its first private owner, Peter Stuyvesant, to the latter decades of the 20th century. Some of the "locals" were people such as Cyrus Field, Peter Cooper, Stanford White, Herman Melville, Edith Wharton, and Sir Arthur Sullivan. It was also the location of theNew York City mayor's official residence (the ornate lamposts are still in place) and the Players' Club is still located on its southern edge.
