About This Item

New Haven: Yale University Press, 1941. Hardcover. Small 4to. Yellow cloth with black lettering, pictorial dust jacket. xi, 381pp. Illustrations, 3 maps, map endpapers. Very good/very good. Faintest of binding edgewear, with inoffensive stain at upper right of front pastedown; jacket a bit edgeworn, with several archivally closed (on verso) edge tears and sunned spine. A tight, attractive fourth printing of this WW@-date study of (to cite front jacket flap) "Exactly what will happen in South America whether Hitler wins or loses?" Author (1889-1967) was a noted Lartin America authority and author; he boldly inscribes and signs the inner flyleaf in blue ink "For / Mr & Mrs Deane Malott / with many thanks / for your generous / hospitality / Hubert Herring / 1942." Malott's custom bookplate (with Cornell University and University of Kansas logos) on front pastedown. Deane W. Malott (1898-1996) was an educator who served as assistant dean at Harvard Business School (1923-29), chancellor of University of Kansas (1939-51) and president of Cornell University (1951-63). Presumably as chancellor he hosted Herring when the author visited University of Kansas.
