Original gray cloth, in unrestored (clipped) dust jacket. Faint finger smudges on front free endpaper and half title, otherwise the volume in entirely fine condition--very clean and fresh inside and out--in a really excellent unrepaired jacket (with a hint of soiling along vertical creases at spine and board edges, tiny notches at the top and bottom of those creases, and very minor wrinkling at spine ends, but with the cover panels and spine unsoiled and unfaded).

This is the desirable first state of the first printing, in the first-issue dust jacket, of Mitchell's perennially popular epic romance, the best-known American novel of the 20th century. The sweeping saga of the South before and after the Civil War won the Pulitzer Prize in 1937, spawned a classic, Oscar-winning film, and reappeared on the New York Times bestseller list twice after publication, in 1986 and 1991. According to ANB, "in all probability it is the most popular and widely read novel in the world and the most famous novel in the English language." This is a pleasing copy that comes without a staggering price tag..
