About This Item

London, United Kingdom: Hodder & Stoughton Small 15 cm x 11 cm softcover pamphlet, undated (roughly c1880-1920 by my guess), consisting of 1. an outer brown paper folder with flaps printed on front with title and author over a square partially coloured floral motif; front and back age toned and lightly foxed, flaps much lighter with hardly a trace of foxing, three tiny splits at hinge ends;---2. a plain buff folder with nothing printed on it, but with a seven-line inscription in ink written in Dutch, dated "24 Mrt 1910 [?or1900]", and with a fragile lock of fine (child's?) human hair attached (as a sentimental old fool, I refuse to remove this); otherwise clean with some very light traces of foxing;---3. 5 buff sheets folded, printed on both sides, thus 20 unnumbered pages, of which 14 are text pages labelled Sunday to Saturday, with inspirational messages all titled "The Divine---", and two woodcut illustrations for each day; again, some tiny traces of foxing, and very pale faded notations in pencil, in English and Dutch, on three pages, another in ink in English refering to a "Funeral April 9 -1968 --- Arnhem, Holland"; this text portion is loose from the covers but secure in the original, and only, staple;---the woodcuts (there are two others on non-text pages) are not credited, the printing was done at "The Edinburgh Press, 68 Old Bailey, London, E.C.";---this item is unique as of this listing date March, 2021; I cannot find another copy for sale online, and I can find no reference to this pamphlet;---there is undoubtedly a sad story or two related to this item, and a celebration of a life lived, but I do not know those stories;---my only provenance is that I acquired this sweet little booklet from the remains of the estate of Dutch-Canadian silhouette artist and graphic designer Hans-Detlev Voss who still lived and worked in The Netherlands during the 1930s/1940s, but without one of his usual tiny self-designed bookplates, so it may have been actually owned by the Dutch-Canadian couple who inherited his library. For more items from the collection of this remarkable man, search my listings using Keywords Dutch-Canadian, or "text in Dutch", and for similar Christian inspiration, see our listings for Everett T. Brown's Memories, and for Harvey Hamlin's The Joys of Fellowship.. Soft Cover. Good.
