About This Item

McDowell, Obolensky; New York; 1958. First American edition (first thus).  SIGNED by Donleavy on the half-title page:  "The Ginger Man / Houston / 15 April 1994 / (signature)."  The Ginger Man is a pub in the Rice University Village in Houston.  Laid into the book is a color photo of a gray-haired and gray-bearded Donleavy (in contrast to his photo as a young man on the back flap of the dustcover) with a table full of drinks in front of him and a beautiful young woman in a tight, short red dress next to him.  Black cloth-covered boards, gilt spine lettering, blind stamped decoration on front cover (matching that on the dustcover front), 8 3/8 x 5 5/8 inches, 327 pp.  Book very good (fading of black cloth over spine due to sunning through the dustcover; modest sunning and a small stain, top edge; 1/8 inch focus of edgewear with erosion of cloth, bottom edge, front board at tip). Dustcover very good (modest edgewear with small chips, top and bottom edges, mostly at spine ends and ends of rear flap fold; 1/2 inch closed tear, bottom edge, rear, near flap fold; moderate sunning, spine).  Defects necessarily described in detail, but both book and dustcover are still very attractive. (3214030). Signed by Author(s). 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good.

Synopsis

Feckless, unwashed, charming, penurious Sebastian Balfe Dangerfield, Trinity College Law student, Irish American with an English Accent, maroon in the ould country and dreaming of dollars and ready women, stumbles from the public house to the pawnbrokers, murmuring delusive enticements in the ear of any girl who'll listen, in delirious search of freedom, wealth, and the recognition he feels is his due. Lyrical and ribald, illuminating, poignant and hugely entertaining, The Ginger Man is a work of authentic comic genius.
