About This Item

Paris: The Olympia Press,, [1955]. His first novel First edition, first printing (priced 1,500 francs on rear cover), of Donleavy's first novel, a rollicking comedy following the misadventures of Sebastian Dangerfield set in post-war Dublin. Like many works coming out of The Olympia Press at this time, including Nabokov's Lolita which was published in the same year, The Ginger Man almost immediately faced challenges of censorship and accusations of obscenity, and it was consequently banned both in Ireland and the USA. The Ginger Man was issued in The Olympia Press's Traveller's Companion Series, which included works widely considered pornographic. Donleavy went to considerable effort to rescue the novel from association with these, well-documented in his autobiography The History of the Ginger Man. Octavo. Original green and white wrappers printed in black. Housed in a custom green cloth folding chemise within green half morocco slipcase, spine lettered in gilt. Very light creasing to spine and at head of rear cover, else a fine copy.

Synopsis

Feckless, unwashed, charming, penurious Sebastian Balfe Dangerfield, Trinity College Law student, Irish American with an English Accent, maroon in the ould country and dreaming of dollars and ready women, stumbles from the public house to the pawnbrokers, murmuring delusive enticements in the ear of any girl who'll listen, in delirious search of freedom, wealth, and the recognition he feels is his due. Lyrical and ribald, illuminating, poignant and hugely entertaining, The Ginger Man is a work of authentic comic genius.
