Presentation Copy, blind stamp on the title, publisher's green cloth gilt, very soft bump on extremities, Kirkpatrick A1.
First edition of Mansfield's first book, published in an edition of only around 500 copies
Important: Provenance: Scofield Thayer (1889-1982), owner-editor of American periodical The Dial, bookplate. Mansfield pushed hard to have her stories published in his pages, but without success. Thayer referred to her as 'England's latest short story prima donna,' in a letter to T.S. Eliot.

Description:
London: Printed for J. Walker, 1788. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First Edition. 12mo. A very good four volume set in contemporary, full tree calf binding with double lettering pieces in red and green. Complete pp. [iii]-vii, [1] 222; [2], 206; [2], 238 & [2], 198. No half-titles which may or may not be wanting, but the pagination for the prelims to vol. I might suggest that one is required? Very good bindings with a little rubbing, a couple of volumes slightly chipped to the head/tail of the spines, corners lightly bruised. Contents clean and tight, manuscript (Greek?) initials to title pages dated 1788 otherwise unmarked, no foxing, paper crisp. A very good set. A Rare Eighteenth Century Novel. We have managed to located just one other copy at auction in the last thirty years and that at Sotheby's sale of July 21, 1993, where it made £1,000 on the hammer, though seemingly not such a nice copy. Referenced by: ESTC T068744.

Very Good Plus, calf a bit darkened, joints starting at top edge Vol. III but holding nicely, a bit of period writing in ink front end pages, the interiors clean and lovely. Of this 2nd English Edition Tobias Smollett said; "We found the first translation so faulty, that it is with pleasure we see the work again undertaken by some more competent author. Our present translator has executed his task with accuracy and fidelity; but to translate Rousseau is a labour of difficulty, it is bending the bow of Ulysses, which few weaker hands can perform." Moving letter from Céline looking back with despair on his eighteen months in prison
New York, Grove Press, 2022, trade paperback, 272 pp, Advance Uncorrected Proof (ARC), New. Straight, tight and clean with no wear or markings in bright, pictorial card covers, no dustjacket as issued. The pieces in this collection, written between 1956 and 1961 and including short fiction, a radio play, and a stunning early novel, offer startling insights into Cohens imagination and creative process. Cohen explores themes that would permeate his later work, from shame and unworthiness to sexual desire in all its sacred and profane dimensions to longing, whether for love, family, freedom, or transcendence. Description:
New York: Random House, 1959. Book. Illus. by Sam March (dust jacket design). Very Good. Hardcover. First Edition.. Small octavo. Humes's second novel, following 'The Underground City,' both of which led to his being considered by Esquire magazine as having the same promise as two obscure guys named Updike and Styron (whoever they are). Anyway, he met a guy named Leary who introduced him to a little substance known as LSD, and after seriously indulging his fondness for the hallucinogen he became a trifle paranoid and a bit delusional, which pretty much ended his writing career. Humes was co-founder (with Peter Matthiessen and George Plimpton) of The Paris Review. He died of prostate cancer in 1992. Black cloth w/gilt lettering, 184 pages. Mildly cocked, light general wear, in price-clipped dust jacket w/light rubbing, light edgewear, creases to fore-edges of both flaps..
