London: printed for the author by S. Buckley in Amen-Corner. 1730. 8vo., (18) + 101 + (13)pp., in a fine old-style half calf over marbled boards, spine gilt with raised bands and labels. A handsome copy. First edition. A charming pocket book for the discerning (and prudent) gentleman, much expanded in numerous later printings right through the 18th century. American editions were also published ca. 1778-1793. 'A farrier is as useful a trade as any other in His Majesty's Dominions; we commonly call him Doctor, because he professes physick and surgery among horses; and some are good sensible men; but people who are able to give their sons learning, seldom bind 'em to that trade; so that farriers are oblig'd to take such apprentices as they can get, without regard to their education. ..... Thus many are illiterate, and some totally incapable of improvement. ..... The design therefore of this little treatise, is to inform gentlemen, 1st. what methods are best to be us'd if their horses fall lame. 2dly. What medicines are proper to give 'em when sick. 3dly. How to direct the manual operations, and escape the impositions of ignorant men'. [Prefece].
