London, Printed by John Nichols, and sold by Eliz. Newbery, 1794.. PART 2, 1794. 8vo, approximately 210 x 125 mm, 8¼ x 5 inches, half year of 6 issues, July 1794- December 1794, plus Supplement, bound together, each month with its own title page with a woodcut of St. John's Gate, 21 plates as called for, 7 with more than 1 image, mostly views of buildings and architectural detail relating to England, plus 1 plate of a reconstructed nose to accompany a letter to the editor describing a surgical procedure developed in India apparently in use for some time (page 891), another of the French Telegraphe, a striking portrait of St. William King of Scots, pages: (2), 585-1212, (16) - indexes, bound in modern half calf over worn marbled sides, gilt rules and lettering to spine, original endpapers. Armorial bookplate of John Duke of Bedford on front pastedown, large pale damp stain on blank endpapers, title page slightly trimmed at fore-edge, no loss of printed area, damp stain repeated much smaller and fainter on some plates, hardly noticeable, occasional light browning to text, an occasional pale fox spot. A very good copy of a very early printed mention in Europe of plastic surgery: "The first report published in Europe on the so-called Indian or Hindu method of rhinoplasty using a forehead flap, accompanied by an engraving of the patient, Cowasjee, with a restored nose and showing the stages of the operation." Garrison & Morton 5735.1. The claim that this was the first mention in Europe is challenged in this volume by another correspondent on page 1093. Edward Cave (1691 – 1754) launched The Gentleman's Magazine in 1731 creating the first general-interest "magazine" in the modern sense. It became the most influential and most imitated periodical of its time. MORE IMAGES ATTACHED TO THIS LISTING, ALL ZOOMABLE, FURTHER IMAGES ON REQUEST. POSTAGE AT COST.
