Sacramento: State Office, J. D. Young, Supt. State Printing, 1889. 4th (no, really) printing. Pamphlet. Very Good. 12mo, printed beige wrappers; pp. 35, [1] (illustration), with b/w line drawings throughout. Wrappers with a little creasing, couple of water droplet stains, overall about very good or better. Illustrations are terrific, depicting the various stages of a silkworm's development (the one where it's lifting its cute little head and looking around with curiosity is PRICELESS), written by someone who (as Secretary of the State Board of Silk Culture) takes all of this very, very SERIOUSLY. A rigorous study of all aspects of silkworming, every bit of which is illustrated, in spades (cross-sections of eggs, etc.). It was, evidently, a best-seller in its day: Of the 8 (total) copies in OCLC, 1 was issued in 1886, 2 in 1887, 4 in 1888, and 1 (as this, a poor dejected 4th printing) in 1889 (none thereafter).

It has some scuffing to the spine and wear, and wear to corners, removing the top surface of the leather. With matching marbled endpapers. The front pastedown endpaper has a small hole. The contents have some brown spotting - this mainly affects the initial leaves and early plates, but there is occasional spotting later on. As they were setting up camp to launch their lion research, gunfire echoed off the cliffs nearby. Gangs of ivory poachers were not only shooting the elephants but also virtually enslaving local villagers. Against unimaginable odds, Mark and Delia stopped the poaching by helping the villagers find other work, start small businesses, and improve their health care and education. Captain Nicolas Baudin's early 19th-century voyage of scientific discovery to Australia is a little-known event in French and Australian history.
