Leeds: Baines and Newsome, 1839. No Binding. Fair. viii, [1] pp 2-423 [1] [28] Adverts. [Lacks Map Frontispiece] A scarce example of Edward Baines' 1839 Leeds Directory. This is a reading copy only. Although complete apart from the foldout map frontispiece the text is heavily worn and occasionally marked. The title page has the top 2 cm removes, not affecting text. There is no binding although the original brown endpapers are present. The information the book contains remains fascinating. For ease of reference it is divided into three sections: Alphabetical Directory, Classification of Trades and The Street Key. At the rear of the book are 28 pages of advertisements for local companies that include the Commercial Street 'Emporium of Fashion', Leeds New Gas Company, Davis's Optical Instruments (with engraving) on Boar Lane and a 'Retreat near Leeds for the Reception and Recovery of Persons Afflicted with Disorders of the Mind.'
