Oroville, California:: Las Plumas Publications, July, 1967.. 1st Edition.. Paperbound: center-stapled format . BINDING/CONDITION: paperbound; center-stapled format; Very Good condition.. 10.75 inches tall by 8.25 inches wide . Description: Many historic photo illustrations, plus a few drawings by Sal Casa. From the author's preface: ''This is not intended to be a history of the Western Pacific Railroad, It is, instead, a collection of stories about the Gandydancers, the men who blasted the rock, graded the roadbed, drilled the tunnels and laid the steel to open a new artery of rail transportation to the East. The gandydancer was a man with calluses on his hands and sweat on his brow. He got his peculiar name from the rhythmic, dancelike movement with which he accompanied the labor of forcing the ballast under the crossties that would hold the ribbon of steel which laced the nation east and west. While other men provided the capital and the technical engineering skills that the huge project required, the Gandydancers contribute the bone and the sinew that got the job done.''

"Gandy dancer is a slang term used for early railroad workers in the United States, more formally referred to as "section hands", who laid and maintained railroad tracks in the years before the work was done by machines. The British equivalents of the term gandy dancer are "navvy" (from "navigator") , originally builders of canals or "inland navigations", for builders of railway lines, and "platelayer" for workers employed to inspect and maintain the track. In the Southwestern United States and Mexico, Mexican and Mexican-American track workers were colloquially "traqueros"." (from Wikipedia) .
