Francis Sheridan was an Irish member of the British diplomatic corp stationed in Barbados when he was ordered to take a several month tour of Texas. He embarked for Galveston on the last Sunday of 1839. At the time, the British Goverment was contemplating formal diplomatic recognition of the Republic of Texas. Official recognition had been formally denied in 1838, but Britian's textile industry, reliant on Texas cotton, forced the goverment to take the issue up again. Britain's powerful abolotionist movement was strongly against recognition of a slave owning republic and the British goverment sent several officials to Texas for eye witness information to help their decision making. Sheridan was one of them. This is his journal of his tour of Texas, almost entirely the Galveston area, in the first few months of 1840. It was not published until 1954. A British book dealer had the original manuscript and sold it to UT Austin in the early 1950s. Willis Pratt was a professor at UT who edited the manuscript for publication. Sheridan's trip got off to a rough start. He assumed the weather in Galveston would be the same as in Barbados and brought only light summer clothing even though he embarked in late December. A nasty storm hit his ship and by the time he arrived in Galveston, he was wearing the borrowed breeches of a marine corporal, the borrowed jacket of a captain, and gloves from the ship's Master. Ships same or next business day well protected in a box. ; B&W Illustrations; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall; 172 pages .
