About This Item

Pennsylvanien, (Pennsylvania) (Lancaster?): No Publisher; possibly Johann Albrecht, 1794. Hardcover. Very Good. Published In Pennsylvania in 1794. 8vo (8 x 5 inches), rebound to period style in dark brown calf with leather and brass clasps, retaining the original rear board, (12) 675 (5), VERY GOOD copy of this rare edition of Menno Simon's work, with no recorded copies in OCLC. Ownership signature of Daniel Wilmerginhis from 1804 on title page, genealogical notices in pencil on p. 243 and again in pen covering births in the family from 1843-61 on o, 438, and some deaths on p. 538 from the 1870s-90s. With continuous pagination but a separate title page (again, no publisher's information) this also includes 'Eine gruendliche Unterweisung, oder Bericht von der Excommunication, Bann, Auschliessung, oder Absonderung der Kirche Christi...' This was a posthumously published work by Menno Simons, who died in 1561, the founder of the Mennonites. This appeared in a William Salloch catalog from 1988 for $400 with the following remarks: '6 leaves, 675 (5) pp. 8vo, contemporary calf, no clasps. FIRST AMERICAN EDITION. Menno Simons' principal work, the "Foundation and Plain Instruction of the Saving Doctrine of our Lord Jesus Christ", with other treatises, forming together the basics of the Mennonite doctrine. The last chapter is on the education of children. Evans 27310. Seidensticker 138. PRINTED BY BENJAMIN FRANKLIN.' This last remark of Salloch's is a puzzle, since Franklin was well past his printing days, and in fact was four years in the ground by 1794!
