About This Item

London: George G. Harrap, 1970. A Fine unmarked copy with near Fine dustjacket which is not price clipped. 344 pages. Translated by Annie Mygind in collaboration with Patrick Henry. The author Bernard Charles Henri Clavel (1923-2010) won the 1968 Prix Goncourt. His novel tells the story of Gaston Dubois and his wife Fernande, forced to work their way into old age, who live in their own small world where the events and tragedies of World War 2 mean little to them. Their cares and troubles are focused on the garden which provides their food, the wood which provides heat for the long winter months, and their children: Paul, the materialistic and unscrupulous son who trades with the Germans in the Black Market; Julien, who represents all the hopes of his mother despite the fact that he is a deserter and chooses to live the life of a bohemian artist. Skilfully written and evoking all the hardships, anguish, and inner conflicts caused by the war, it is a powerful story, rich in characterization and incident. A1B. First Edition. Hard Cover. Fine/Near Fine. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
