Hartford, Conn: Edwin Valetine Mitchell. First Edition. Octavo. Limited to 1000 copies. Edited with an introduction by Natalie Shipman. The story by John Lord who at sixteen years old volunteered to join the fight of the Civil War. He writes of the years 1860s-1880s. One of the most interesting stories he tells is of the Leadville Boom. Much like the gold rush of the 1850s, he writes how forty-five thousand people, mostly men with only one hundred and fifty women and children made camp. He says not one negro, Chinaman or Japanese but all grades of Americans. He tells how he took one hundred and fifty head of cattle and sold them from sixty to one hundred dollars per head where he would usually get only around twenty dollars per head. He writes about Billy the Kid, the James boys, about the Big Game of Wyoming, and his further travels and adventures. Very well written account. Bound in brown cloth paper labels to front board and spine. A fine bright copy in nearly fine dust jacket with just a hint of wear to head. Very nice.
