London: The Hogarth Press and Routledge & Kegan Paul, 1974. Hardcover. Very Good/very good. Published jointly by the Princeton University Press and Routledge & Kegan Paul in 1974. Light shelf wear to the book; a bit more to the tips, corners, and edges of the jacket. Clean and unmarked. First printing, no others noted. Besides providing a wealth of material about both the theoretical and the institutional developments of early psychoanalysis, the correspondence also charts the intense relationship between Freud and Jung during the period in question. Where Jung wrote of his "unconditional veneration" for Freud, the latter in turn claimed that "Your person has filled with confidence in the future". What has been seen as a mixture of narcissistic idealisation and grandiosity on the part of both men, combined with the persisting theoretical differences of substance over the Libido theory in particular, led ultimately to the break-up of the relationship - giving the shape of the correspondence something of the appearance of a classic tragedy.--Wikipedia. "In no way does it disappoint the large expectation it has naturally aroused, and (apart from minor reservations about some of the translations) the quality of the edition is widely recognised."--Lionel Trilling in the New York Times. The Hogarth Press and Routledge & Kegan Paul, 1974
Hardcover, 650 pages
Description
As historical documents the letters reflect the early struggles of Freud and Jung in gaining acceptance for analysis. The two exchange candid opinions on their colleagues, plan strategies for the advancement of their cause and, most importantly, share their experiences with patients and with the reading that led them to new scientific realisations. The decline of the correspondence documents Jung's increasing reluctance to accept the entire Freudian code, and the growing bitterness that led them to the mutual decision to end the correspondence and the relationship.
