About This Item
Lipsiae: apud Samuelem Hannaverum, 1730. Leather Bound. Very Good. Lipsiae: apud Samuelem Hannaverum. (2) [140] 18mo. Fully bound in modern brown calf-skin leather. Black morocco title stamp with gilt lettering and borders. Gilt spine borders. Tight binding and solid boards. No shelf wear, as binding and cover are essentially brand new. New, cream-colored endpapers. Minor darkening to extremities of pages. Otherwise, clean, unmarked pages. Intricately detailed copper-plate engraved decorative borders at beginnings of chapters. Overall, a beautifully restored volume, rebound in fine, gift quality leather. Franz Woken was a German educator, historian, linguist and Lutheran theologian. His great grandfather, Bartholomew had studied with Martin Luther at the University of Wittenberg before becoming a Lutheran pastor. Woken himself was educated at the school of Kolberg, University of Rostock, and later, Leipzig University where he acquired a fortune of knowledge in philosophy and theology and Oriental culture. Woken's combined knowledge of the Oriental language as well as Lutheran theology led him to become well-versed in biblical criticism with a trans-cultural focus. This exceptional work would make a fine addition to the library of any theologian. Please feel free to view our photographs of this piece. Ships daily.
