[8 pp.] Christmas greetings from Caroline [Gordon] and Allen Tate, consisting of a poem from his Selected Poems of 1937, beginning "Not yet the thirtieth year...". Two small coffee ring stains, toning and wear to the edges, the string has broken with partial loss. Interior quite attractive. Good only, but of the several books printed for Tate by Harry Duncan and co. this seems among the most scarce.

Reprints are available but this is an original copy in rebound buckram. There is some damage what looks like wet ink staining ~20 pages and the last ~30 pages but does not affect printing. Binding is tight. A great reference work of the original publication. A rare book.

Tyler was a Harvard lawyer noted for helping to suppress Shay's Rebellion, who later moved to Vermont, eventually becoming a law professor and Chief Justice of the Vermont Supreme Court. He also wrote poems and plays, including "The Contrast", in 1787, which is noted by The Oxford Companion to American Literature as being the second play and the first comedy to be written by an American author. "The Chestnut Tree" is a longish poem foretelling a more industrialized New England and America. This 1824 poem was believed lost until a handwritten copy was found among a descendant's papers. From the estate of my great-great grandfather.Includes many unique poems and recitations such as "To a skull", "Uncle Daniel's Introduction to a Mississippi Steamer", "The Leak in the Dyke", etc. More well-known poetry includes "Song of Birds", "Old Ironsides", and "Bannock Burn" by Robbie Burns. Light rubbing and bumps to outside spine edges. Back cover and interior cloth covered board has a stain at top. Original owner's name and address from 1908, but no other writing or marks. First 2 pages have a stain at top, but text of 192 pages of poetry and recitations is totally clean with light tanning of pages.
